HTML Content Slider

A little while in this post forrst.com/posts/… I was after a good cross browser html content slider. Now given that this is a common thing, you'd think, simple right? Not so much. You'd be amazed how many content sliders are image only. Anyway, after a few suggestions I settled on using Zurbs - Orbit, which to be honest isn't great at all. For some reason you cannot just have html content slides, it must have an image, and it's buggy and has errors in IE. You can actually see it in action here though -> bytewire.co.uk. So today, i'm in search of an alternative. I just need something that will simply take a HTML markup of slides and slide them along with some navigation. Nothing to amazing. So I am now open to your suggestions as to some simple great jQuery plugins that can do this for me. IE7+ and all other major browsers would be fantastic.

Cufon vs @font-face?

I've just picked up a template which uses cufon to render fonts. I'm more familiar with @font-face and have used it to great success of late. One thing that striked me was how Cufon was littering my page with extra elements and splitting up chunks of text to create it's effects. What I wonder is whether or not Cufon has any effect on seo? I'm thinking about moving it to @font-face but in honesty if there is no need to do so I won't bother.

Wordpress Static Content Problem

Please take a look at this screenshot first: cl.ly/… You'll see three blocks of content, for a client site that I'm building at the moment, i'm pretty familiar with wordpress and have built a few sites in it before. It's all gone pretty swimmingly up until now. These blocks are called into template files where needed with a call to a function, and to begin with that was fine as the client did not want to be able to edit these. But he has now changed his mind and he wants to be able to edit them, so I was just wondering how everyone would do it. Baring in mind these are not part of any page as they act like a widget and are called into the templates at the bottom where needed. Whilst also remembering I need to be able to allow him to do edit them pretty nicely. Thanks in advance folks.

Login with Facebook Button

Hi peops, Am looking into implementing a login with facebook system into a new application we are building. I grasp the aspects of displaying the login button which once clicked allows permission to another script which effectively can hunt for the details we requested. However what I don't really have an answer or a tutorial for is, redirecting the user straight after the allow click to a script which can authorize the info with facebook and set them up an account with us and then log them in. It needs to be quite a seamless integration otherwise it would be pointless doing. So im reaching out for tutorials, pointers anything really. This is not a FB application, just a web app using the external login with FB button to grant our site permissions for data.

Back up system for Mac in small office

Myself and my colleague are working out of a small office, we've encountered some problems lately with a buggy iMac, which seems to be destroying itself beyond repair every now and again. Which has massively made us double take the way we backup our data. We're now looking to make sure we do on and offsite backing up of both our macs asap. I just wanted to see what everyone else is using in terms of backup applications as ideally. Being the lazy perfectionist I am I sort of want an application that can, backup my mac to external hard drive behind the scenes and also sync remotely to another service like for instance amazon s3 to double secure everything. Perhaps you might have done something similar recently, would love to hear your views.

Anybody using any good SMS sending services, for web apps?

We want to be able to send SMS messages to users mobiles at certain points, should they want to. But struggling to find a good service with a decent API. We're basically sending automated SMS messages to users paying for the privilege, to keep them up to date with their accounts on the move. Any previous experience with a good service / company I would be very grateful if you could wack a nice little comment on this post.

Activity refresh in game browser window

I'm currently about to embark on making a new browser based game. Previously we've developed other games using Php,mysql,Ajax and jquery. This time we're having a shop around for useful additions / replacements for our current toolset before we get going. We've already implemented redis to store some of the more irratatingly large queries. Currently I'm considering the methods we use for activity refresh on the user screen and creating a user based chat module (something a little like facebooks, but with game chat and trade chat channels). I've always used Ajax for our current chats and activity refresh but am considering whether this is the best option. using ajax it requires a rather lame 5second interval and even if there's nothing new to fetch it attempts to anyway. I'm reaching out to try and find what other peoples ideal approach would be to site wide messaging and activity of a user who's screen needs updating without a reload. Cheers in advance!
